What is Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)?
CRPS is a chronic pain condition causing severe pain localized to one limb (hand, arm, foot, or leg) following an injury. The condition is thought to develop due to damage or malfunction of the peripheral or central nervous system. CRPS is classified into two types based on diagnostic testing:
- CRPS-I: Previously referred to as reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome, does not have confirmed nerve damage.
- CRPS-II: Previously known as causalgia, involves identified nerve damage.

The exact cause of CRPS isn’t known. However, symptoms often arise after an injury such as a fracture, cut, burn, or even a minor medical procedure like a needlestick.

During the evaluation, they review your symptoms, medical history (especially looking for an underlying injury), and examine the affected limb. Diagnostic tests such as blood work or imaging may be requested to rule out other causes of pain. They may also perform an electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction study (NCS) to assess nerve damage.
