Spinal stenosis refers to a narrowing of your spine that leads to pressure or pinching of your spinal cord and/or nerve roots, resulting in pain. The narrowing most often affects the lumbar (lower back) or cervical (neck) spine.
Common symptoms of spinal stenosis include:
Symptoms caused by spinal stenosis tend to worsen over time. If you’re experiencing back or neck pain or have been diagnosed with spinal stenosis and your symptoms are worsening, our team can develop a plan to relieve your symptoms and improve your quality of life.
Spinal stenosis can develop from many causes, most often due to degenerative changes that occur in your spine as you age. These changes can lead to bony growths, herniated discs, and thickened ligaments, causing height loss within your spine and resulting in pressure and pinching. Other causes include tumors and injuries to the spine.
Our team conducts a comprehensive evaluation when you come in with concerns of back or neck pain or a history of spinal stenosis. The evaluation begins with a review of your symptoms and medical history, followed by a physical exam. Diagnostic testing, such as X-rays, MRI, electromyography (EMG), or nerve conduction studies (NCS), may be requested to better understand the cause of your symptoms and help direct the treatment plan.
Our team develops individualized treatment plans for managing spinal stenosis based on the location of the narrowing, the severity of your symptoms, and your overall medical history. Initially, we take a conservative approach to care, recommending physical therapy, pain medication, and/or anti-seizure medication.
If conservative measures fail to relieve your symptoms or if your symptoms worsen, we may suggest more invasive treatments, including:
We may also suggest acupuncture or massage therapy to help relieve your symptoms.
